At Mitcham, we provide a program to assist students from language backgrounds other that English. EAL support is given across the years prep to six, through one-to-one assistance, small group withdrawal or within the context of the student’s classroom. This additional support is provided in the areas of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. There are currently forty children on the EAL program. These include new arrivals, refugees and students who do not speak English at home. In general, the progress of EAL students in Learning English are reported against the stages of the EAL standards included in the EAL Companion to the Victorian Curriculum.
